Doosan Infracore Background

Doosan began life in 1937 as Chosun Machine Factory with facilities in Manseokjeong (now Hwasu-dong), Incheon and main offices in Seoul, South Korea. This factory was the first large-scale machine shop in Korea and is credited with the beginning of Korea’s modern machine industry.

At this time the company manufactured mining machinery for gold mine development including its own steel casting, forging and canning. Once the Pacific War broke out in 1941, it also met military demand manufacturing ship engines.

In 1960s the company developed its design team, concentrating on mining equipment, construction equipment and transporters. There was fierce competition to work in Chosun Machine Factory with 50 applicants for every position and once employed they used the Manual of Machine Drawing and Collection of Industrial Machine Drawings as their textbooks.

Thanks to this recruitment drive and development of their team, alongside technical alliances with several established companies, the company expanded it’s business by manufacturing marine diesel engines, railway vehicles and forklifts.

To accommodate this additional business, a large-scale production system was established in 1970s and this expansion continued in 1975 with the construction of a diesel engine factory with annual production capacity of 60,000 units, making it the largest capacity production in Asia at the time.

In the early 1980s Doosan invested heavily in it’s TQC quality planning and research, developing new technologies and diversifying the production models, in particular the development of Solar excavators and Storm engines.

The company was renamed as Doosan Infracore in 2005 and purchased Bobcat as well as Gunsan construction equipment plant, Incheon small diesel engine plant and global R&D centre to support the growth of the business.
