CUMMINS ENGINE RATINGS
The ratings specified by Cummins are based on conditions outlined in ISO 8665, which is 100kPa (29.612 in Hg) and 25 °C (77°F) and 30% relative humidity. When power from the propeller shaft is referred to, this is the power available after typical gear losses and is 97% of rated power.
Power is rated in accordance with IMCI procedures.
HIGH OUTPUT (HO) ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use infrequently and in applications with changing load requirements, typically with a load factor of 10-30%.
Maximum power will be limited to one in every eight hours of use and reduced power operation must be at <80% load.
HO rated engines are designed for use with recreational vessels only. If they are used in applications which provide revenue, then they will be considered commercial and Cummins will not honour any warranty.
Examples of HO engines include use in are recreational fishing vessels, yachts, and cruisers.
INTERMITTENT DUTY (INT) ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use intermittently and in applications with variable load requirements, typically with a load factor of 20-40%.
Maximum power will be limited to two in every eight hours of use and reduced power operation must be at <80% load and cruise speed RPM.
Examples of INT vessel engines include use in planing hulls, military and police vessels, charter fishing, and some non-net dragging fishing vessel applications.
Examples of INT auxiliary engines include use in hydraulic powerpacks, thrusters for manoeuvring, and emergency fire pumps.
MEDIUM CONTINUOUS ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use continually and in applications with variable load requirements, typically with a load factor of 40-60%.
Maximum power will be limited to six in every eight hours of use and reduced power operation must be at <80% load and cruise speed RPM.
Examples of medium continuous vessel engines include use planing hull ferries, fishing boats designed for high speeds to and from fishing grounds, (non-cargo) displacement hull yachts, and short trip coastal freighters where engine load and speed are cyclical.
Examples of medium continuous auxiliary engines include use in powerpacks and some cargo pumps.
HEAVY DUTY (HD) ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use continually and in applications with variable load requirements, typically with a load factor of 60-75%.
Maximum power will be limited to ten in every twelve hours of use and reduced power operation must be at <80% load and cruise speed RPM.
Examples of HD vessel engines include use in displacement hull vessels such as mid-water fishing trawlers, purse seiners, and towboats where frequent slowing is common and engine speed and load is stable. They may also be used in high-speed vessels such as ferries and crew boats.
Examples of medium continuous auxiliary engines include use in cargo pumps and thrusters in dynamic positioning modes.
CONTINUOUS DUTY (CON) ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use continually and in applications, typically with a load factor of 70-90%.
Examples of HD vessel engines include use in ocean-going displacement hulls such as deep water fishing trawlers, freighters, tugboats, pushboats, bottom drag trawlers and towboats.
LIGHT DUTY (LD) ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use intermittently and in applications with variable load requirements, typically with a load factor of 10-30%.
Maximum power will be limited to one in every eight hours of use and reduced power operation must be at <80% load.
PRIME POWER (PRIME) ENGINES
Engines with this rating are advised for use continuously and in applications with variable load requirements, typically with a load factor of 10-30%.
An overload capacity of 10% can be used with these rated engines for a period of one hour in ever 12 of use, though running at this increase d load should not exceed 25 hours per in any 12 month period. This is in compliance with ISO 8528.
